Landlord/Tenant Changes Bill Signed Into Law by Governor

On July 2nd, Governor Cooper signed SB 644 Landlord/Tenant Changes into law. SB 644 was unanimously passed by both Chambers and would have become law on July 3rd if the Governor had not signed or vetoed it. The bill was championed by sponsors Senator(s) Danny Britt (R- Columbus, Robeson), Jim Perry (R-Lenoir, Wayne), Paul Newton (R- Cabarrus, Union), and was the Apartment Association of North Carolina's top priority in this legislative session.

Designed to streamline and advance landlord/tenant law in North Carolina, the passage of this bill will address debt collection clarification, tenant criminal record screenings, and clarify rights for collection of property in small estates. Officially closing the gap on this long-standing priority is a great win for housing providers across the state.
