Piedmont Triad Apartment Association, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Winston-Salem Dash and WXII Partner to Fill the Stands with Cans to Benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC
Greensboro & Winston-Salem, NC– July 13, 2017 - On July 21, 2017 volunteers from the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association (PTAA) will be stationed outside the gates of BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, and First National Bank Field in Greensboro, to collect food and cash donations for the annual Fill the Stands with Cans fundraiser to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC. This is the 8th year that PTAA has partnered with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Winston-Salem Dash and WXII for this event, which last year resulted in enough food and cash being collected for Second Harvest to provide 17,832 meals to food-insecure people in northwest North Carolina.
According to Jon Lowder, Executive Director of the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association, Fill the Stands with Cans, helps meet a critical need for Second Harvest during one of its most challenging times of year.
“Every summer Second Harvest’s resources are stretched thin because so many children who rely on free and subsidized meals at school are out of school for the summer,” said Lowder. “That means that Second Harvest and its partner agencies have to supply more food to needy families, and we are so fortunate to be able to partner with three organizations that are dedicated to addressing the community’s needs. For eight years now the Dash, the Grasshoppers and WXII have worked with us to host the games and promote Fill the Stands with Cans, and each year it gets a little bigger. Last year we raised enough food and cash to provide almost 18,000 meals and this year we hope to raise 20,000 and we’d love reach 25,000 meals.”
Anyone can participate in Fill the Stands with Cans by bringing non-perishable food items or cash donations to the Grasshoppers and Dash games on Friday, July 21, 2017; both games start at 7:00 pm. Volunteers from PTAA will be at each gate at both ballparks to collect donations, 100% of which will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC. As an added bonus, both teams will have fireworks shows after their games conclude.
