Solving the Apartment Industry's Big Staffing Problems with Tiny Steps

A panel of apartment leaders gathered recently at a sesion at the National Multifamily Housing Council's OpTech Conference in National Harbor, MD. GlobeSt.com reports on the strategies they discussed for approaching the biggest staffing issues for apartment operators.

The panel was made up of Laurel Zacher, Vice President, Marketing and Talent Development, Security Properties Residential; David Scharfenberg, Senior Vice President of Operations, Waterton; and Jen Piccotti, Chief Learning Officer, Swift Bunny; with moderator Kendall Pretzer, CEO, Grace Hill.

Among the successful strategies cited were regular calls, sometimes in the form of open town hall meetings, between employees and the highest levels of management to increase communications about operations.

Jen Piccotti pointed out that maintenance technicians often feel left in the dark about policies because many don't have company emails. 

The panel also discussed rising wages, and how crucial supporting employees can be - perhaps moreso than compensation on it's own.
